Where the 2027 raise stands (October 12, 2026)
The President's alternative pay plan (Aug 26, 2026) sets a 7% / 6% / 5% raise effective January 1, 2027. The House-passed FY2027 NDAA (H.R. 8800) matches it; the Senate Armed Services Committee bill (S. 4784) would instead give every grade 3.6%, the statutory formula. The Senate bill has not passed, so no conference agreement exists yet.
What the difference is worth by rank
Monthly basic pay for common career points. The last column is how much more a year the 7-6-5 plan pays than the 3.6% formula. For an E-5 over 6 years that is $1,676 a year; for an O-4 over 12, $1,661.

* Capped at $18,999.90/month. Basic pay for general and flag officers is capped at Level II of the Executive Schedule (37 U.S.C. 203(a)(2)). The 2026 cap is $18,999.90/month, visible as the flat top of the O-8 and O-9 rows. Executive Schedule raises follow the General Schedule base raise, which the same Aug 26 plan holds at 0% for 2027, so this chart assumes the cap stays at $18,999.90. If Congress overrides the civilian freeze, the cap rises and some capped cells move.
If the Senate's 3.6% wins instead
The same 2026 table raised 3.6% across the board, at the points in a career most people look up.

How these numbers are built
- Projected rates are the 2026 DFAS table value times (1 + raise), rounded to the nearest $0.10, the precision the published tables use.
- The plan text names E1 to E5, E6 to O3, and O4 and above; it does not name warrant grades separately. In the statutory order of pay grades (37 U.S.C. 201), W-1 through W-5 sit between E-9 and O-1, inside the E-6 to O-3 range, so this chart applies 6% to warrant officers. Confirm against the DFAS tables when they publish.
- Basic pay for general and flag officers is capped at Level II of the Executive Schedule (37 U.S.C.
- Other uniformed services (U.S. Public Health Service and NOAA Corps) get 3.6% under the same plan, because the 7-6-5 rates apply to the Armed Forces only.
What else changes on January 1
BAH
Announced separately, usually in mid-December. See 2027 BAH rates: release date and what to expect.
BAS
Moves with the USDA food cost index, not with basic pay. Current rates: BAS rates.
TSP
A bigger raise means a bigger TSP contribution at the same percentage, and a bigger BRS match. Check your elections in the TSP calculator.
Retirement
A higher base raises the High-3 your pension is figured from. Model it in the retirement calculator.
Frequently asked questions
When does the 2027 military pay raise take effect?
January 1, 2027. Because the active-duty mid-month payday covers the 1st through the 15th, the new rate first shows up on the mid-January paycheck.
How much is the 2027 military pay raise?
Under the President's plan, which the House-passed NDAA matches: 7% for E-1 through E-5, 6% for E-6 through O-3, and 5% for O-4 and above. The Senate Armed Services Committee bill would give every grade 3.6%, the statutory formula. As of October 12, 2026 Congress has not settled on one figure.
Is the 2027 pay raise final?
Not yet. If Congress enacts a different figure in the final NDAA before January 1, that figure applies. If it does not, the President's plan takes effect on January 1, 2027.
Do warrant officers get 6% or 5%?
The plan text names E1 to E5, E6 to O3, and O4 and above; it does not name warrant grades separately. In the statutory order of pay grades (37 U.S.C. 201), W-1 through W-5 sit between E-9 and O-1, inside the E-6 to O-3 range, so this chart applies 6% to warrant officers. Confirm against the DFAS tables when they publish.
Does the pay raise change my BAH?
No. BAH is set separately from local rental and utility costs and is announced in mid-December for January 1. A bigger basic pay raise does not raise BAH, and BAH does not count toward the raise.
Does the 2027 raise affect military retirement pay?
For people still serving, yes: High-3 and BRS retired pay are computed from basic pay, so a larger raise raises the base your pension is figured from. People already retired do not get the basic pay raise; their retired pay gets the annual cost-of-living adjustment, a separate number tied to inflation.
