Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the National Guard pay per drill weekend?
One drill weekend = 4 drill periods. Each drill period pays 1/30th of your monthly base pay. For an E-5 with 4 years, that's approximately $131 per period or $526 per drill weekend.
Do Guard/Reserve members get BAH?
Never for drill weekends — Inactive Duty Training carries no housing allowance at all. On active duty orders you get a housing allowance, but which type depends on order length. Orders of more than 30 days (31+) draw locality BAH based on your primary residence ZIP. Orders of 30 days or fewer draw BAH Reserve Component/Transit (BAH RC/T), a flat national rate that does not vary by location — so a 14-day Annual Training normally pays RC/T, not zero. The exception: a short order issued in support of a contingency operation draws the full locality rate (37 U.S.C. § 403(g)(4)(B)). If you are assigned adequate government quarters, no housing allowance is payable, though a member without dependents receives Partial BAH. Compare drill, AT and ADOS side by side →
What is Tricare Reserve Select?
TRS is health insurance available to all Selected Reserve members. Family coverage costs $286.66/month (2026) — compared to $1,500-$2,000+/month for comparable civilian employer family coverage. This makes TRS one of the most valuable Guard/Reserve benefits, saving $14,000-$20,000+/year in health insurance costs.
