Promotion to SGT and SSG runs on an 800-point system across four categories. Some points are hard to move before the next cutoff (weapons, fitness test, awards); others you can earn in a few weekends (online courses, credentials, CLEP). Weapons scores count for 24 months. The fitness test counts from your most recent record test, even if it is lower than an earlier one. Points are recalculated monthly from IPPS-A, so a course finished this month counts once it posts in ATRRS.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum number of Army promotion points?
800 for both SGT and SSG, split across military training, awards, military education and civilian education. The category maximums differ by rank: SGT gets more weight on weapons qualification, SSG on awards and civilian education.
What is the fastest way to get promotion points?
Online courses through ATRRS and Army e-Learning (1 point per 5 hours, up to 90), credentials (5 to 15 points each, up to 50) and CLEP or DSST exams (2 points per credit hour). All three can be done in weeks, while weapons, fitness and award points only change at the next qualification, test or award.
How long do weapons qualification points count?
Up to 24 months from the qualification date. Soldiers in a unit without weapons may keep using their last score until they are assigned to a unit with weapons.
Where do I see my official promotion points?
In IPPS-A, on your Promotion Points Record. That is the number HRC compares to your MOS cutoff score each month.
